What is Reiki?

The practice of Reiki was developed by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 20th century.  It is a natural and original healing method believed to work on the physical, emotional and spiritual levels by promoting the body’s regenerative self-healing abilities.

 

The word Reiki (pronounced RAY-KEY) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’.  Although it comes from Buddhist traditions, it is entirely energy based and has no association with religion, faith or belief system.

Who can have Reiki?

Reiki is a non-invasive healing process or treatment and is suitable for anyone including young children and the elderly.  It is entirely energy based and the body will take only what it needs.

On your first appointment a brief medical history will be requested and you will need to sign a consent form.  This information is for treatment purposes only and will be kept confidential.  

Reiki sessions are carried out on a treatment couch or sitting in a chair whilst wearing loose and comfortable clothes.  The practitioner gently places their hands in a non-intrusive way on or just above different parts of the body. There is no massage involved.  The aim is to focus on treating the whole person rather than specific body parts or symptoms. 

During a Reiki treatment, you may experience slight tingling or warmth around problem areas, others sometimes experience colours.  Those who are particularly stressed or going through challenging life circumstances may experience an emotional release.
