The ultimate body care experience...
Massage is a therapeutic treatment which aims to relax, revive and heal the body through the manipulation of soft body tissue such as muscle.
There are numerous benefits of massage both physical and emotional. These include:
Relaxes mind and body and eases symptoms of stress
Increases blood and lymphatic circulation bringing oxygen and nutrients to the parts being massaged and taking away waste products. This can help with muscle stiffness, aches and pains
Relaxes tight muscle and relieves stiff joints
Helps to induce feelings of peace and calmness
Encourages deeper and more relaxed breathing
Improves the condition of the skin
Promotes general feelings of wellness.
What are the benefits of massage therapy?
Who can have massage therapy?
Massage therapy is available for most people whether for relaxation or for specific purposes. As with every complementary therapy, however, there may be occasions when massage therapy is not suitable. If in doubt, please contact us to discuss your specific circumstances.
What happens during a massage therapy session?
Massage therapy is carried out on a treatment couch. Only the area the therapist is working on will be exposed.
Massage therapy is based on the principles of Swedish Massage and uses a variety of gliding, kneading and cross-fibre friction strokes to soothe muscles, enhance circulation and improve relaxation. The pressure applied may be varied depending on the part of the body being worked and client needs/wishes. Massage therapy is meant to be pleasurable so enjoy the moment!
What do I wear?
If you've not had massage therapy before, you may have some questions about what to wear during a massage therapy session. Firstly, it is important to know that you will remain draped at all times and your therapist will only uncover the area being worked on. As a professional massage therapist, I will never expose the private parts or any other areas you identify.
Depending on whether you are having a back or full body massage treatment, different clothes will require to be removed. If you are having a back massage, you will need to remove all the clothes from your upper body to get the most out of the treatment. If you are having a full body massage, you will need to remove all your clothes except your underwear bottoms.
Your therapist will leave you in private at the beginning and end of the treatment to get changed in your own comfort. If you are concerned about undressing, please discuss this with you therapist who should be able to offer you some options. Don't be afraid to discuss any apprehensions or concerns. Everything is treated confidentially.
Some key points to remember:
Come to the session dressed as you normally would
Women, keeping your underwear bottom on is fine but if you keep your bra on it makes it difficult to work on your back
Only the clothes on your upper body are removed during a back massage
Please DO NOT start undressing before the therapist leaves the room and always get under the towel before the therapist comes back into the room. (Don't worry, this will all be explained during the initial consultation)
Remove jewellery e.g necklaces
Tie long hair up
If in doubt, just ask!
How to get the most out of your Massage Therapy experience:
Be as open to the process as you can. Relax and try to let go of thoughts. Focussing on your breathing can help you relax and free your mind of thoughts. Sometimes people hold their breath when a sensitive area is being worked but it is best to breathe through it. In the same way, tightening your muscles during a massage is counterproductive.
What happens after a massage?
At the end of your massage, the therapist will leave the room so that you can dress in private. Wait on the treatment couch for a few moments just to make sure you are fully grounded and especially if you can sometimes get light-headed. You will be offered a glass of water before leaving.
To get the most out of your treatment, it's important that you allow some quiet time for yourself and not to go back to work, engage in exercise or other responsibilities immediately.
How you feel after massage therapy will vary on the style of massage, the length of the treatment and the demands you put on your body afterwards. Feelings can range from feeling relaxed, renewed and centred to invigorated. You may experience increased clarity, new insight and increased energy. Massage therapy can leave the body free from tightness and chronic pain patterns but may temporarily replace this with mild soreness from the pressure applied. If this is the case, you may want to rest the area.
The benefits of massage therapy are cumulative so you should experience the benefits as you attend further sessions.
