During a Hypnotherapy session, the conscious part of the mind is relaxed whilst simultaneously stimulating and focusing on the subconscious part.  Using skilled relaxation techniques a heightened state of awareness is reached which allows the practitioner to make appropriate suggestions for change.

Who can have hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is suitable for most people including children.  There may occasionally be times, however, when it is not suitable for an individual.  If in doubt, please contact us to discuss your specific situation.

What happens when I go for a treatment?

On your first appointment your practitioner will explain the process and give you the opportunity to ask any questions.  This is an extremely important part of the process as there are many misconceptions about what Hypnotherapy actually is.

Following this, a detailed medical history will be requested and you will need to sign a consent form.  This information is for treatment purposes only and will be kept confidential.  

During your first session we will discuss your specific health needs and treatment goals which will be revisited at each subsequent session.  What happens during a session is tailored to your specific needs although the structure of a session largely remains the same.

The first part of a Hypnotherapy session is called the induction where you are lead to a very relaxed state known as hypnosis.  The therapy or suggestion stage follows and this is where the ‘change work’ takes place.  Change work that takes place is only ever what is agreed at the outset and what you want to happen.  The final part of the treatment is where positive changes are reinforced and you are returned to full waking state. 


There are a number of different Hypnotherapy techniques that may be used during a session and these will be discussed with you before a session begins.

It is important to remember that during Hypnotherapy sessions you remain in complete control and can end the session at any point, should you so wish.

Hypnotherapy is carried out whilst sitting in a chair.  Please wear loose and comfortable clothing for your session.

Some important points to remember about hypnotherapy:

Hypnotherapy is an effective therapy and is enhanced by your desire and motivation to change.  We aim to help you in the minimum number of sessions possible. 

The average number of sessions is dependent on individual circumstances and treatment plans.  On average, clients will need between three and four sessions, although for some, more or less will be required.  Hypnotherapy for smoking sessation can be achieved in 1 or 2 sessions. 

  • Hypnosis is an awake state – you are not asleep

  • Hypnosis is a state of relaxation

  • You remain in control at all times.  The hypnotherapist is simply the guide.

  • You can come out of hypnosis at any point you choose – you do not get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis

  • During hypnosis you remain aware of your surroundings and in a state of daydream type thinking

  • Hypnosis is a collaborative and cooperative teacher-client relationship

  • During hypnosis you will be offered beneficial suggestions which you are free to accept or reject.

How many sessions will I need?

How will I feel during and after a hypnotherapy session?

Hypnotherapy is a normal state of mind and most people feel very relaxed during a session.  It can be likened to daydreaming or the sense of total relaxation moments before falling asleep.  The difference is that this relaxed state is induced by the hypnotherapist during the first part of the session.


There is no one particular feeling and clients report different sensations.  Some feel very heavy whilst others feel very floaty and light. Other clients report feeling nothing at all.  Each person’s experience is unique to them and may vary from time to time. However, the important thing to remember is that Hypnotherapy is a pleasurable, enjoyable experience where you’ll most likely feel extremely relaxed, peaceful and calm.


After a Hypnotherapy session, you will feel alert and fully able to continue with your day with your subconscious mind already making the changes worked on during the therapy session.
